SUMMARY:IONS Exchange 2024
DESCRIPTION:IONS Exchange is a two-day gathering for people in the Community Impact sector in Nova Scotia to learn together and celebrate the work we do\n\n\nIONS Exchange 2024: Reciprocity in Practice\n  \nWe’re holding space for people to come together\, rest\, connect with each other\, and share ideas with the intention of tapping into the creative energy and inspiration needed to break the status quo. We hear you: current systems and structures in the Community Impact (Nonprofit) Sector can make it hard to support our communities and ourselves; you’re feeling isolated\, disconnected\, and burnt out. You do the often undervalued yet critical work to make a positive impact in your communities – but where is the space to slow down\, recharge\, and get energized by what’s possible. \nIONS Exchange is a two-day gathering that offers an opportunity for the people working and volunteering in the sector to be in community together\, learn from Indigenous knowledge holders\, gain new tools and ideas\, and celebrate the work we are doing for our communities. \nExchange speaks to the intentional design of the event\, which will encourage relationship development and reciprocal knowledge sharing. This gathering is meant to give space to develop meaningful relationships within our network\, learn about and offer promising practices and resources to support our work\, and provide a sense of rest\, unity\, and empowerment to lift the spirit. IONS Exchange will offer a variety of ways and activities for people to learn\, create\, inspire\, and connect. \nTo learn more about the event details\, please visit exchangens.ca \n  \nIONS Exchange Stipend\nOur desire is for Exchange to be accessible to people working in the Community Impact Sector\, especially those from Equity Deserving Communities. We have a limited number of Stipends available to cover registration\, travel\, and/or accommodations – these are given through an application process based on need and number. \nWe wish for the diversity of our sector to be reflected in the attendance of this event. We recognize the disproportionate barriers in particular to Indigenous\, Black\, and Racialized participants to engage in events such as Exchange\, as well as members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ and disability communities. Thus\, we are prioritizing removing financial barriers for people from these Equity Deserving Communities to encourage the conditions for greater exchange and relationship building between people from different parts of our sector. \nTo apply for an IONS Exchange Stipend please fill out the following online form. \nPlease note\, we will only be accepting applications for Stipends until Monday\, April 8\, at 12pm noon. This is so that we have time to organize and communicate about the stipends to applicants\, and people can make decisions about attendance and travel. We may accept and approve stipend applications on a rolling basis. \n  \nAccessibility Information\nThe Eventbrite registration has a section to fill out accessibility needs or requests. Please indicate any accessibility needs you may have in your Eventbrite registration form. If you have general questions or concerns related to accessibility\, please contact IONS Engagement Lead Clary Chambers – clary@ions-dev.alltimelowe.com. We wish to support participants and remove barriers to participation as much as possible – we have some funding to cover additional accessibility costs on a case-by-case basis. \nEvent Details and Location Feautures\nTo learn more about the event and facility features\, please visit exchangens.ca \n  \nMasking and COVID-19 Considerations\nWe will not be requiring the use of masks at the event\, but encourage wearing a mask if that is preferable or comfortable for you. Please reconsider your attendance if you are feeling unwell in order to protect the health of our community. \n

SUMMARY:Antigonish Community Conversations: Creating Welcoming Workplaces
DESCRIPTION:Join Impact Organizations of Nova Scotia (IONS) for a community conversation in Nova Scotia’s Antigonish area\n\n\nCommunity Conversations: Community Conversations: Creating Welcoming Workplaces\n  \nJoin Impact Organizations of Nova Scotia (IONS) for a community conversation! \nThis event will provide a chance to connect impact organizations (nonprofits and charities)\, learn about how IONS defines “Welcoming Workplaces” and why they are important\, and leave with some resources and next steps to help you make your organization more welcoming. \nBecoming a Welcoming Workplace is not something that can happen overnight. SUMMARY:Community Impact Sector Day of Recognition 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Community Impact Sector Day of Recognition to celebrate your work with a full day of activities\, performances\, and awards!\n\n\nBelow the Surface: Celebrating the Depth of Impact\nWhat if the Community Impact (Nonprofit) Sector didn’t exist? Programs and services are just the tip of the iceberg. The sector’s role includes trust-building and strengthening social ties\, important advocacy efforts\, therapeutic and wellness supports through arts and recreation\, and giving people the connections and experiences to be able to tap into their whole selves. \nThe sector has long been an incubator for generating ideas for a better Nova Scotia – one that centres relationships\, creativity\, community\, and equity. Innovation comes from a place of trust and knowing what’s needed for those experiencing injustices. \nImpact Organizations of Nova Scotia (IONS) and United Way Halifax\, with support from the Province of Nova Scotia are pleased to present the Community Impact Sector Day of Recognition. This year’s theme\, “Below the Surface: Celebrating the Depth of Impact” recognizes the influence of our work which reaches every corner of Nova Scotia. Our goal is to surface the essential role that impact organizations play in innovating this province\, pushing for change\, and improving collective quality of life. \nPart of shedding light on this depth of impact includes imagining what it would look like if these organizations and groups were absent in society. What would happen? \nOn Friday May 12th\, we’ll be celebrating you and your work with a full day of activities\, performances\, and awards. The morning’s capacity building workshops will focus on how to amplify your stories of impact and how to leverage media to influence change. The afternoon will be hosted by Portia Clark of CBC Information Morning and will feature live art performances and 20 Invisible Champion Awards\, presented by the Bhayana Family Foundation. The event will be hosted in person at the Cedar Event Centre in Halifax and livestreamed across the province. Please join us in recognizing the worth of the Community Impact Sector’s work. \nWe are proud to recognize our supportive sponsors\, the Bhayana Family Foundation\, and the Province of Nova Scotia. \n \nEngaging those in community work from across the province is an important part of celebrating the sector’s collective work. To increase accessibility in attending the in-person event\, we’re happy to offer a number of $150 travel stipends to attendees outside of the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). Stipends will prioritize members of equity-deserving communities living in rural areas. Please fill out the application here to be considered for a stipend: Stipend Application \nFor those who are able and would like to contribute\, Pay it Forward tickets are available to support the travel stipend for members of equity-deserving communities. Pay it Forward tickets are by donation\, and not mandatory in attending the event. To make a donation of any amount\, please select the Pay it Forward ticket option in registration. Thank you! \n \nPlease note\, we are encouraging a maximum of up to 5 attendees per organization to help ensure the event can be shared by a wide variety organizations from across the sector and province. If there are any concerns related to this\, please reach out to hello@ions-dev.alltimelowe.com \n \nUnited Way Halifax and Impact Organizations of Nova Scotia (IONS) in partnership with the Government of Nova Scotia and the Bhayana Family Foundation hold an annual day of recognition for the community impact sector. The day is proclaimed by the Government of Nova Scotia to bring awareness and recognition to the sector and the crucial work done by so many social impact organizations across the province. The Bhayana Family Foundation initiated the proclamation process in 2019 with United Way Halifax and IONS\, and in 2020 the First Day of Recognition was proclaimed. Additionally\, as part of its national mandate to increase recognition of this important sector\, sponsors 20 Invisible Champion Awards annually that recognize the commitment and impact by nonprofit staff and organizations. They are presented as part of this event.\n\nIf you have any questions about the schedule\, accessibility measures\, the venue\, and/or food options not outlined in the FAQs below\, please write to Michelle—she will be happy to assist you! michellemunro@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Ethical Story Building for Narrative Change - Session 2
DESCRIPTION:Explore the fundamentals of narrative change and learn ways to integrate it into strategic plans\, storytelling\, and communications!\n\n\nSeries Description:\nCommunications is a strategic site of intervention for impact organizations (nonprofits and charities). Media\, policymakers\, sector colleagues and the public are all influenced by the dominant\, often harmful\, narratives that shape our work. When we see communications as a tool for change\, not just outreach and awareness\, we can build capacity to shift the conversations that influence our work. This is the work of narrative power building. \nNarrative power is “the ability to create leverage over those who set the incentives\, rules and norms that shape society and human behavior.” (Rashad Robinson\, 2018). When we build this power together\, we interrupt the pervasive narratives that undermine our work towards justice\, equity\, decolonization\, diversity\, and inclusion (JEDDI). \nEthical Story Building for Narrative Change is a two-part training series designed to help equip organizations with the tools to understand and harness narrative power towards social change. Participants will explore the fundamentals of narrative change as a practice and learn tangible ways to integrate it into their strategic planning\, storytelling\, and communications. These interactive sessions will enable organizations to come together and build shared capacity for narrative change. \nAlthough recommended\, if you were unable to attend session 1\, you are still able to register for session 2. \nSession 2: Lived Experience Storytelling\nBuilding on the frameworks and information in the first session\, this session will explore how organizations can uplift lived experience/first voice storytellers through trauma-informed communications. We will bring a clear JEDDI approach to this work to ensure that we interrupt harmful and exploitative storytelling and communications practices and contribute to broader narratives of justice and change. We will explore how lived experience storytelling accelerates narrative change work and how organizations can do it safely. \nParticipants will leave with: \n\nAn understanding of the risks and opportunities of lived experience storytelling\nTools to understand power and authorship \nA practical process for working with storytellers\n\nFacilitated by:\nSarah Joynt-Bowe (she/they) \n\n\n\nSarah is a communications and narrative change strategist with over 15 years of experience developing dynamic\, effective work for organizations in three countries and countless sectors. Over the course of her career\, she has worked across strategic functions from in-house corporate communications to consulting and agency planning. \nShe has proven skills in campaign development\, brand strategy\, qualitative research\, and workshop facilitation with an emphasis on building radical narrative power. Sarah is also an active community organizer working within anti-racist\, abolitionist\, and feminist social movements.

\nAlthough not required\, we recommend participants attend both sessions\, to get the most out of the workshop. \n \nSession 1: Building Narrative Power\nThe first session will cover the fundamentals of narrative power building\, the role of storytelling and counternarratives\, navigating misinformation\, and using narrative to further JEDDI (justice\, equity\, decolonization\, diversity\, inclusion) goals. This introduction will challenge you to imagine new narratives rooted in shared values and lived experiences and find allies in your ecosystem to help build systems of solidarity\, support\, and power. \nParticipants will leave with: \n\nA foundational understanding of narrative power building\nSkills to navigate misinformation \nTools to build and understand your narrative ecosystem\n\nSession 2: Lived Experience Storytelling\nBuilding on the frameworks and information in the first session\, this session will explore how organizations can uplift lived experience/first voice storytellers through trauma-informed communications.

SUMMARY:Alphabet Soup: Series 1 "Invitation to Unlearn"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first series of a 2SLGBTQIA+ learning journey exploring discrimination\, community\, history\, and hope across Nova Scotia.\n\n\nAlphabet Soup: Queerness at the Kitchen Table\nThe Cape Breton Youth Project and Impact Organizations of Nova Scotia (IONS) are partnering on a 2SLGBTQIA+ Learning Journey about the queer community in Nova Scotia. Join us for Alphabet Soup: Queerness at the Kitchen Table. \nThis is not a new approach for IONS. Over the past two years\, IONS has been offering learning opportunities for the Community Impact Sector and beyond\, centered around local context and knowledge. These learning journeys\, offered as webinar series\, create the building blocks for collective understanding and unlearning rooted in justice\, equity\, decolonization\, diversity and inclusion (JEDDI). The first was the Decolonization Learning Journey (DLJ). Created in partnership with Unama’ki College\, this journey featured the voices of Indigenous Elders\, Knowledge Sharers\, scholars\, and practitioners\, laying the foundation for reflection\, dialogue and movement towards decolonization and reconciliation. Following on the national impact of the DLJ\, IONS partnered with the African Nova Scotian Decade of People of African Descent Coalition (ANSDPAD) to offer a Black History Learning Journey (BHLJ)\nThis learning journey will begin with Series 1 “Invitation to Unlearn”\, a 5-part webinar series running on Tuesdays\, from February 7th to March 7th 2023. This series will provide a foundational understanding of queer experiences highlighting diverse voices from Nova Scotia’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Breaking through biases\, creating understanding and empathy\, and empowering the 2SLGBTQIA+ community is a step towards a more just and equitable Nova Scotia.\n\n\nSeries 1: Invitation to Unlearn\nWelcome to the kitchen table! The first series of this learning journey “Invitation to Unlearn” is a 5-part webinar series aimed at providing a foundational understanding of queer experiences across Nova Scotia historically and in this moment. How have things changed from then until now? What myths are we still holding as a society? What does coming out look like in 2023? How do we recognize the multiple identities and lived experiences of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community?\n \n \nSeries 1 will set the context for the following learning journeys\, as we listen and engage with diverse voices from Nova Scotia’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Each session will focus on a different learning topic highlighting a panel of storytellers who will share their experiences with the audience.\n \n \nHosted by Madonna Doucette (she/her) of the Cape Breton Youth Project and moderated by Alexandra Theroux from IONS\, the session format will include a knowledge\, content portion followed by a storytelling panel and break out sessions as applicable. Participants will have an opportunity to engage with the speakers through a Q&A will period.\n \n \nThe team intends to compile compassionate support resources to offer to learners\, and also offer live support in a breakout room. The breakout room will be hosted by Andrea Currie (she/ her); Andrea is Saulteaux – Metis and a member of the queer community. She is an activist\, a musician\, and works as an Indigenous mental health counsellor. \n \nMeet Your Alphabet Soup Hosts:\n\n\n\nSeries 1 is comprised of five(5) virtual sessions via Zoom scheduled for Tuesdays from 1:30-3:30pm (ADT) starting February 7:\n\nSession 1: Tuesday\, February 7th: Words Matter\nSession 2: Tuesday\, Februay 14th: Love and Family\nSession 3: Tuesday\, February 21st: Queer AND… (Intersectionality)\nSession 4: Tuesday\, February 28th: Queerness at the Kitchen Table\nSession 5: Tuesday\, March 7th: Queerness Then and Now\n\nNOTE: All sessions are being recorded and the recordings will be available on our website (here) within one week of each session.\n\n\n\nSession 1: Words matter: becoming your authentic self \nFeb 7th \, 2023 – 1:30-3:30 \nUnlearning of binary biases of gender and sexual identities and experiences begins with words; words that can harm\, words that can communicate diversity and solidarity\, and words that can heal. In this first session in the Invitation to Unlearn series\, three storytellers from the Cape Breton Youth Project team will share how words have shaped their journey of becoming their authentic selves. \nStorytellers/speakers (CBYP staff team) \n\nSefin Sefura (he/him) \nJay Denny (she/they/nekm) \nBradley Murphy (he/him) \n\nStory Prompts: \nHow have words shaped your journey of becoming your authentic self? How have words healed or affirmed your identity? \nWhat are the words that you have claimed\, reclaimed to step into your authentic self? \n \nSession 2: Love and Family \nFeb 14th\, 2023 – 1:30-3:30 \nIn recognition and challenge of Valentine’s Day\, this session will offer some ‘myth busting’ about love. Three storytellers with diverse love experiences will share the myths that they have had to ‘bust’ to be in a healthy relationship (with themselves\, or others). \nStorytellers/speakers \n\nLuna LeFort (she/her) \nZailynne Durante (she/they)\n\n(Regrets from Emily Kane (she/they) and Dave Miller (he/him) who were unable to attend) \nStory Prompts: \nWhat are some myths about love that you had to ‘bust’ to be in a healthy relationship (with yourself\, with your family\, with your partners(s)? \nShare your love story \n \nSession 3: Queer AND… (Intersectionality) \nFeb 21st\, 2023 – 1:30-3:30 \nMany members of the queer community hold additional identities\, visible and invisible\, that add complexity to their journey towards being their authentic selves\, psychologically and socially. Five queer storytellers with intersecting identities around race and disability will share their experiences. \nStorytellers/speakers \n\nSuzi Oram Aylward (she/ they) \nTyler Colburne (he/him) \nCeilidh Isadore (they/ them) \nCarmel Farahbakhsh (they/them) \nChris Cochrane (she/her) \n\nStory Prompts: \nHow do the multiple identities you hold show up? \nHow do you navigate the complexity of your various identities while striving for your whole authentic self? \n \nSession 4: Finding yourself and coming out\, queerness at the kitchen table \nFeb 28th\, 2023 – 1:30-3:30 \nIn the Maritimes – difficult conversations traditionally happen around the kitchen table – meals\, celebrations and hard truths. What stops people from coming out or not? What happens when you must let people go? How does the queer community provide safety? Five people from the queer community share their coming out stories. \nStorytellers/speakers \n\nSuzi Oram-Aylward (she/they) \nJason Spurrell (they/them) (aka\, Rouge Fatale (she/her) \nBradley Murphy (he/him) \nRae Paul – (they/them) \nSefin Sefura (he/him) \n\nStory Prompts: \nShare a story about your coming out – what about your experience needs to be heard? \n \nSession 5: Queer Community\, Then & Now \nMarch 7th\, 2023 – 1:30-3:30 \nThrough activism\, advocacy\, solidarity\, celebration\, and love\, the queer community has been alive and growing strong in Nova Scotia for many decades. Four storytellers from across generations share their perspective on the positive change they have experienced. \nStorytellers/speakers \n\nMadeline Yakimchuk (they/them) \nVeronica Merryfield (she/her) \nRebecca Rose (she/her) \nLeykey Beals (they/them) \n\nStory Prompts: \nWhat is the biggest positive change that you have seen in your lifetime in/for the queer community? \nWhat does the community need now and how does this look different from different generational perspectives?

SUMMARY:Telling your Story: Crafting an Impactful Narrative Antigonish
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a session of sharing\, learning\, food\, and collaborating on impactful storytelling.\n\n\nEvery day the Community Impact Sector is improving lives and affecting change. There has been no shortage of challenges faced by our communities and the sector. Impact organizations have stepped up in big ways to provide care\, support\, and resources. Through a global pandemic\, social injustices\, and dangerous hurricanes (just to name a few!)\, our sector has been working behind the scenes – but what if we collectively and boldly told these stories of impact and positive change? How powerful would that be? \nThis fall\, we’re eager to be in communities around the province to hear your stories and share skills for communicating your organization’s impact! The IONS team will be hosting and facilitating our storytelling workshop\, designed to help your organization amplify its voice\, build a narrative that resonates\, and ultimately – together\, to change the narrative of the Community Impact Sector through the power of telling our stories. \n\nTelling Your Story: Crafting an Impactful Narrative\nOften storytelling feels out of reach. We think of the creatives\, the videographers\, writers\, and the artists. But storytelling is a communications tool that we can all leverage within the sector. This in-person workshop is an introduction to storytelling and for people\, organizations\, and communities. Learn about the stories you can tell\, the different ways of telling stories\, and the many ways to connect with an audience to have your stories heard. You’ll have a chance to reflect on your own storytelling\, leverage your strengths\, practice storytelling\, and build confidence to tell stories that will connect with people and promote action. \nThis workshop is for you if… \n\nYou’ve got a story to tell\, but you don’t know where to start \nYou’re craving in-person\, collaborative learning with peers in your community\nYou need a roadmap for crafting a story that furthers your impact \nYou are in the ‘business’ of changing hearts and minds – of funders\, policy makers\, stakeholders\, or community \nYou want to inspire action or engagement \nYou want to learn the building blocks of an effective story \n\nCome connect with us and your community for a session of sharing\, learning\, and collaborating. Light breakfast\, snacks\, and lunch will be provided. There is no cost to your organization. Once registered\, additional information will be shared about the venue\, timing\, catering\, and COVID-19 protocols. \nSpace is limited\, register today!

DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about new data from Nova Scotia’s Community Impact Sector! We’ll share our most recent survey report and more!\n\n\n2022 State of the Community Impact Sector: Survey Data\, Map & Dashboard Launch!\nIn February-March\, IONS distributed the 2022 State of the Community Impact Sector survey as a follow up to the one included in the 2020 State of the Sector report. We also worked behind the scenes gathering data for a new online dashboard and interactive map to better understand what’s happening across the sector. \n \nJoin us on June 23rd as we share what we heard in the survey about challenges and opportunities facing nonprofits and charities in Nova Scotia. We’ll also give a tour of the dashboard and map so you can revisit it in your own time and use it to support your work. We hope to see you there!
