SUMMARY:Alphabet Soup: Series 1 "Invitation to Unlearn"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first series of a 2SLGBTQIA+ learning journey exploring discrimination\, community\, history\, and hope across Nova Scotia.\n\n\nAlphabet Soup: Queerness at the Kitchen Table\nThe Cape Breton Youth Project and Impact Organizations of Nova Scotia (IONS) are partnering on a 2SLGBTQIA+ Learning Journey about the queer community in Nova Scotia. Join us for Alphabet Soup: Queerness at the Kitchen Table. \nThis is not a new approach for IONS. Over the past two years\, IONS has been offering learning opportunities for the Community Impact Sector and beyond\, centered around local context and knowledge. These learning journeys\, offered as webinar series\, create the building blocks for collective understanding and unlearning rooted in justice\, equity\, decolonization\, diversity and inclusion (JEDDI). The first was the Decolonization Learning Journey (DLJ). Created in partnership with Unama’ki College\, this journey featured the voices of Indigenous Elders\, Knowledge Sharers\, scholars\, and practitioners\, laying the foundation for reflection\, dialogue and movement towards decolonization and reconciliation. Following on the national impact of the DLJ\, IONS partnered with the African Nova Scotian Decade of People of African Descent Coalition (ANSDPAD) to offer a Black History Learning Journey (BHLJ)\nThis learning journey will begin with Series 1 “Invitation to Unlearn”\, a 5-part webinar series running on Tuesdays\, from February 7th to March 7th 2023. This series will provide a foundational understanding of queer experiences highlighting diverse voices from Nova Scotia’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Breaking through biases\, creating understanding and empathy\, and empowering the 2SLGBTQIA+ community is a step towards a more just and equitable Nova Scotia.\n\n\nSeries 1: Invitation to Unlearn\nWelcome to the kitchen table! The first series of this learning journey “Invitation to Unlearn” is a 5-part webinar series aimed at providing a foundational understanding of queer experiences across Nova Scotia historically and in this moment. How have things changed from then until now? What myths are we still holding as a society? What does coming out look like in 2023? How do we recognize the multiple identities and lived experiences of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community?\n \n \nSeries 1 will set the context for the following learning journeys\, as we listen and engage with diverse voices from Nova Scotia’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Each session will focus on a different learning topic highlighting a panel of storytellers who will share their experiences with the audience.\n \n \nHosted by Madonna Doucette (she/her) of the Cape Breton Youth Project and moderated by Alexandra Theroux from IONS\, the session format will include a knowledge\, content portion followed by a storytelling panel and break out sessions as applicable. Participants will have an opportunity to engage with the speakers through a Q&A will period.\n \n \nThe team intends to compile compassionate support resources to offer to learners\, and also offer live support in a breakout room. The breakout room will be hosted by Andrea Currie (she/ her); Andrea is Saulteaux – Metis and a member of the queer community. She is an activist\, a musician\, and works as an Indigenous mental health counsellor. \n \nMeet Your Alphabet Soup Hosts:\n\n\n\nSeries 1 is comprised of five(5) virtual sessions via Zoom scheduled for Tuesdays from 1:30-3:30pm (ADT) starting February 7:\n\nSession 1: Tuesday\, February 7th: Words Matter\nSession 2: Tuesday\, Februay 14th: Love and Family\nSession 3: Tuesday\, February 21st: Queer AND… (Intersectionality)\nSession 4: Tuesday\, February 28th: Queerness at the Kitchen Table\nSession 5: Tuesday\, March 7th: Queerness Then and Now\n\nNOTE: All sessions are being recorded and the recordings will be available on our website (here) within one week of each session.\n\n\n\nSession 1: Words matter: becoming your authentic self \nFeb 7th \, 2023 – 1:30-3:30 \nUnlearning of binary biases of gender and sexual identities and experiences begins with words; words that can harm\, words that can communicate diversity and solidarity\, and words that can heal. In this first session in the Invitation to Unlearn series\, three storytellers from the Cape Breton Youth Project team will share how words have shaped their journey of becoming their authentic selves. \nStorytellers/speakers (CBYP staff team) \n\nSefin Sefura (he/him) \nJay Denny (she/they/nekm) \nBradley Murphy (he/him) \n\nStory Prompts: \nHow have words shaped your journey of becoming your authentic self? How have words healed or affirmed your identity? \nWhat are the words that you have claimed\, reclaimed to step into your authentic self? \n \nSession 2: Love and Family \nFeb 14th\, 2023 – 1:30-3:30 \nIn recognition and challenge of Valentine’s Day\, this session will offer some ‘myth busting’ about love. Three storytellers with diverse love experiences will share the myths that they have had to ‘bust’ to be in a healthy relationship (with themselves\, or others). \nStorytellers/speakers \n\nLuna LeFort (she/her) \nZailynne Durante (she/they)\n\n(Regrets from Emily Kane (she/they) and Dave Miller (he/him) who were unable to attend) \nStory Prompts: \nWhat are some myths about love that you had to ‘bust’ to be in a healthy relationship (with yourself\, with your family\, with your partners(s)? \nShare your love story \n \nSession 3: Queer AND… (Intersectionality) \nFeb 21st\, 2023 – 1:30-3:30 \nMany members of the queer community hold additional identities\, visible and invisible\, that add complexity to their journey towards being their authentic selves\, psychologically and socially. Five queer storytellers with intersecting identities around race and disability will share their experiences. \nStorytellers/speakers \n\nSuzi Oram Aylward (she/ they) \nTyler Colburne (he/him) \nCeilidh Isadore (they/ them) \nCarmel Farahbakhsh (they/them) \nChris Cochrane (she/her) \n\nStory Prompts: \nHow do the multiple identities you hold show up? \nHow do you navigate the complexity of your various identities while striving for your whole authentic self? \n \nSession 4: Finding yourself and coming out\, queerness at the kitchen table \nFeb 28th\, 2023 – 1:30-3:30 \nIn the Maritimes – difficult conversations traditionally happen around the kitchen table – meals\, celebrations and hard truths. What stops people from coming out or not? What happens when you must let people go? How does the queer community provide safety? Five people from the queer community share their coming out stories. \nStorytellers/speakers \n\nSuzi Oram-Aylward (she/they) \nJason Spurrell (they/them) (aka\, Rouge Fatale (she/her) \nBradley Murphy (he/him) \nRae Paul – (they/them) \nSefin Sefura (he/him) \n\nStory Prompts: \nShare a story about your coming out – what about your experience needs to be heard? \n \nSession 5: Queer Community\, Then & Now \nMarch 7th\, 2023 – 1:30-3:30 \nThrough activism\, advocacy\, solidarity\, celebration\, and love\, the queer community has been alive and growing strong in Nova Scotia for many decades. Four storytellers from across generations share their perspective on the positive change they have experienced. \nStorytellers/speakers \n\nMadeline Yakimchuk (they/them) \nVeronica Merryfield (she/her) \nRebecca Rose (she/her) \nLeykey Beals (they/them) \n\nStory Prompts: \nWhat is the biggest positive change that you have seen in your lifetime in/for the queer community? \nWhat does the community need now and how does this look different from different generational perspectives?

SUMMARY:Telling your Story: Crafting an Impactful Narrative Amherst
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Christ Church – Anglican for a session of sharing\, learning\, food\, and collaborating on impactful storytelling.\n\n\nEvery day the Community Impact Sector is improving lives and affecting change. There has been no shortage of challenges faced by our communities and the sector. Impact organizations have stepped up in big ways to provide care\, support\, and resources. Through a global pandemic\, social injustices\, and dangerous hurricanes (just to name a few!)\, our sector has been working behind the scenes – but what if we collectively and boldly told these stories of impact and positive change? How powerful would that be? \nThis fall\, we’re eager to be in communities around the province to hear your stories and share skills for communicating your organization’s impact! The IONS team will be hosting and facilitating our storytelling workshop\, designed to help your organization amplify its voice\, build a narrative that resonates\, and ultimately – together\, to change the narrative of the Community Impact Sector through the power of telling our stories. \n\nTelling Your Story: Crafting an Impactful Narrative\nOften storytelling feels out of reach. We think of the creatives\, the videographers\, writers\, and the artists. But storytelling is a communications tool that we can all leverage within the sector. This in-person workshop is an introduction to storytelling and for people\, organizations\, and communities. Learn about the stories you can tell\, the different ways of telling stories\, and the many ways to connect with an audience to have your stories heard. You’ll have a chance to reflect on your own storytelling\, leverage your strengths\, practice storytelling\, and build confidence to tell stories that will connect with people and promote action. \nThis workshop is for you if… \n\nYou’ve got a story to tell\, but you don’t know where to start \nYou’re craving in-person\, collaborative learning with peers in your community\nYou need a roadmap for crafting a story that furthers your impact \nYou are in the ‘business’ of changing hearts and minds – of funders\, policy makers\, stakeholders\, or community \nYou want to inspire action or engagement \nYou want to learn the building blocks of an effective story \n\nCome connect with us and your community for a session of sharing\, learning\, and collaborating. Light breakfast\, snacks\, and lunch will be provided. There is no cost to your organization. Once registered\, additional information will be shared about the venue\, timing\, catering\, and COVID-19 protocols. \nSpace is limited\, register today! \n This event will be hosted at Christ Church – Anglican \nUse the LaPlanche Street Entrance (parking behind Church)

SUMMARY:Decolonization Learning Journey: Series 5 "Reconciliation in Action"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the fifth series of the Decolonization Learning Journey with Mi’kmaw Elders and knowledge carriers.\n\n\nDecolonization Learning Journey\nIn response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action\, IONS (formerly the Community Sector Council of Nova Scotia) embarked on our own organizational learning journey in the fall of 2018. \nAs part of IONS’ ongoing commitments\, our goal is to continue to deepen individual and organizational understanding of Canada’s shared history with Indigenous Peoples to build capacity and to mobilize the Community Impact Sector. IONS took a shared leadership role in co-creating a shared learning space across the province and country to create dialogue\, genuine shifts\, and meaningful movement toward reconciliation. In partnership with Unama’ki College at Cape Breton University\, we launched the “The Decolonization Learning Journey” in June 2020 and have offered four online webinars series since (which can be found on our website here). Join us for the fifth series this spring\, as we incorporate and practice reconciliation and living as Treaty People.\n\n\nSeries 5: Reconciliation in Action\nWe cannot get to Reconciliation without truth\, and we cannot be ready without being aware. Series 5 “Reconciliation in Action” builds on the foundation series of the Decolonization Learning Journey. The capacity to learn\, grow\, and bring reconciliation to life increases when we are taking challenging steps with purpose\, courage\, and humility – and while surrounded by peers who are sharing the experience. This series will focus on understanding what Reconciliation is and why it’s vital work (TRC\, Treaty Education\, UNDRIP\, moral duty) to be able to move in ways that center authentic relationships and wise action. \n\n\n This series is comprised of three (3) virtual sessions via Zoom scheduled for the first three Mondays in June from 1:00-3:00pm (ADT):\n\nSession 1: Monday\, June 6th: Treaty Education as a Relationship \n\n\nSession 2: Monday\, June 13th: Acknowledging the Land\n\n\nSession 3: Monday\, May 20th: Working with Indigenous Communities\n\nNOTE: All sessions are being recorded and the recordings will be available on our website (here) within one week of each session.\n\nWebinar Descriptions and Details:\nMonday\, June 6 – Treaty Education as Relationship\nDescription: The Treaties that apply to this part of Mi’kma’ki (Nova Scotia) are rooted in peace and friendship. Although they are a critical part of understanding our broader context\, Treaty Education is the title given movement related to understanding what it means to be a “Treaty Person”which includes everyone who calls this province home. Although the Treaty Education initiative has only been afoot since 2015\, the unique approach to establishing it has created numerous opportunities for participants to re-imagine a way to change conversations around the dinner tables about Reconciliation and why relationships are at the root of it all.\nHosting Team: Elder Jane Meader\, Wyatt White\, Nicole Cammaert\nKnowledge Sharers:\n\nJacqueline Prosper\, Treaty Education Lead at Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey\nCeleste Sulliman\, Director\, Treaty Education at Nova Scotia Office of L’nu Affairs\nAnn Terese Doucette\, Mi’kmaq Relations Officer – Cape Breton Field Unit of Parks Canada\n\nMonday\, June 13 – Acknowledging the Land: There is much to learn and understand between the intent and potential impact of making territorial acknowledgement statements as part of your organization’s “standard of practice”. While this practice has become quite mainstream\, the impact or value is negligible unless there is a desire to use this action as a steppingstone towards something greater. Here in Mi’kma’ki\, L’nu people will often close a prayer or moment of sharing with the phrase “Msit No’kmaq” which translate to “All my Relations.” If you understand how important interconnectivity amongst all beings within the Mi’kmaw worldview\, you will gain a deeper understanding of just how important acknowledging a territory really is. \nHosting Team: Elder Jane Meader\, Wyatt White\, Nicole Cammaert\nKnowledge Sharers:\n\nLaurianne Sylvester\, Dean\, Unama’ki College at Cape Breton University\nMelody Martin-Googoo\, Coordinator of Mi’kmaq Education & Services at Chignecto-Central Regional Centre for Education\nSarah Prosper\, Dancer & Artistic Director of Samqwan\nAmy Grant\, Lead Storyteller at Pink L’nu\nAaron Prosper\, Indigenous Health Consultant\, NS Health Authority\n\n\nMonday\, June 20 – Considerations when working with Indigenous Communities\nDescription: Your motivation to connect with a Mi’kmaw community or organization should guide your method of engagement. Everyone seeks to respect the people\, culture\, history\, customs and traditional practices of the first people of this territory\, especially when forming or growing a working relationship. With a healthy dose of humility and capacity to listen\, you’ll find that Mi’kmaw communities and organizations are also deeply interested in opportunities to support healthy\, vibrant communities who are empowered and engaged with the world around them. This session will cover various important considerations and mindsets to carry forth when working with Indigenous communities.\nHosting Team: Wyatt White\, Nicole Cammaert\nKnowledge Sharers:\n\nAnnie Battiste\, Reconciliation Consultant and Speaker at Office of the Treaty Commissioner\, Saskatchewan\nDenise DiGiosia\, Senior Advisor\, Mi’kmaw and Indigenous Initiatives (L’nuey Nikanus) at NSCC\nRobert Bernard\, Pantiteketew (Path Maker) and owner of Indigenous Guide Consulting Services

Topics will include the unique issues of pregnancy loss at work\, including the physical and psychological effects on an employee’s health and how that translates to the individual’s ability perform at work. For those seeking HR support and “promising practices”\, this session will focus on creating a psychologically safe work environment for pregnancy loss disclosure and compassion support\, effective bereavement practices for pregnancy loss\, and leave options for employees suffering from pregnancy loss.\n \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDevelop an awareness of the issues faced by employees experiencing pregnancy loss. \n\n\nUnderstand the four characteristics of effective bereavement support in the workplace. \n\n\nUnderstand the leave options available to employees via government or organizational programs and policies.\n\nWho Is this webinar For? \nThis webinar is open to anyone in the sector who wants to learn more about compassionate HR and leadership practices when responding to bereavement support\, with a particular focus on pregnancy loss.\n\nMeet the Speaker: \n\n\n\nDr. Stephanie Gilbert is an Associate Professor in the Shannon School of Business at Cape Breton University. She received her doctorate in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Saint Mary’s University. SUMMARY:Exploring the 4-Day Work Week
DESCRIPTION:Join us April 13 for a session discussing research & emerging promising practices around implementing a 4-day work week across organizations\n\n\nExploring the 4-Day Work Week: Research & Protoyping\nJoin us virtually on April 13th\, 10 am – 11:30am\nLearning Stream: Systems Change & Innovation \n\nIt has been nearly 100 years since the 40-hour work week was popularized\, and while society and technology have made great strides since then\, the 9-5 has remained part of our culture. With the labour force shifting\, the Great Resignation\, and an increased focus on employee retention and work-life balance – people are challenging the 40-hour work week and adopting different ways of working. \nThis session will explore the needs of a post-pandemic workforce within the emerging reality of a job seekers market. With increasing competition for labour\, employees are prioritizing organizational culture and work-life balance. More companies and organizations are piloting or fully adopting a 4-day work week and seeing great benefit. Success stories from Iceland\, New Zealand and Spain – who have experimented with the 4-day work week – have shown that staff are experiencing a better work-life balance\, increased productivity\, and overall happiness in their work. \nMany in the Community Impact Sector are looking for ways to experiment but lack the time to develop a pilot or implementation plan. In this session\, we will share recent research and emerging “promising practices” for organizations at or near a point of readiness to be able to pitch or implement the 4-day work week. \n The goal of this session is to share the concept of the 4-day work week\, as well as shape an ongoing Learning Action Network of those leaders ready to implement; to learn together (challenges and successes) and collaborate on how to structure internal systems and policies. \n*The 4-day work week is defined as working 32 hours per week and being paid 100% compensation. \n \nLearning Objectives:\n\nUnderstand the benefits and the challenges of the 4-day work week. \nUnderstand the 4-day work week versus a compressed work week. \nLearn from the success stories from countries and organizations around the world who have implemented this new way of working. \nDevelop a list of considerations such as the development of staff and board engagement process and an implementation plan (including building success measurement into your evaluation and implementation plan).\n\nWho Is this webinar For? \nThis webinar is open to senior leaders in organizations who are at the point of readiness to experiment with the 4-day work week model in a co-learning environment. \n\nResources \nIn order for participants to be informed prior to this webinar\, we suggest taking a few minutes with the following resources: \n\nWill a Four-Day Work Week Come to Canada\nCBC Halifax Interview on April 5\, 2022\nShort article: Four Day Work Week an Overwhelming Success in Iceland\nFull report (long report but well laid out for reviewing with ease): Going Public: Iceland’s Journey to a Shorter Working Week\n\n\nMeet the Speaker: \n\n\n\nErika Shea\nHailing from Western and Central Canada\, for the last decade Erika Shea has called Cape Breton home. \nHer role with New Dawn has allowed her to engage in the work of its various divisions and to meet the many bright and passionate people working to shift the course of Cape Breton Island.
